kyle..the elk hides i had were salted. i got them from an elk farm that stored them in a barn loft. i soaked them a few days and scraped the hair off and made several hand drums out it the hides. they all have a good sound to them.i rinsed them off first with a garden hose then soaked them and emptied the water a coupla times. so it really dont matter if they are salted or not. you just do them the same way.

Hey my uncle gave me a huge Elk hide when i was younger, it has the hair on the one side still and on the flesh side it is kinda yellow and you can tell he took it to somebody to get professionally done. So my question is 1, how do i tell if it is salted and 2 if it is salted i can not make the hide into a drum after deferring it? Or i will just have to wash it about one hundred times? Can you help me out please
